The Art of Cyril Neville

The Uptown Ruler

Two-Time Grammy Award winning artist Cyril Neville, known for his deep roots in the music world, also finds expression through painting, merging his eclectic creative talents. His artwork is a vibrant extension of the rhythm, soul and cultural depth that define his music. It often reflects the rich cultural tapestry of New Orleans, showcasing vibrant colors and dynamic forms that resonate with the rhythms of his musical background. Each brushstroke carries the spirit of his heritage and the influences of blues, gospel, jazz, rock, latin, and reggae, creating a visual melody that speaks to the viewer.

Neville's artwork is deeply influenced by the dynamic storytelling of Ernie Barnes, the bold abstraction of Picasso, the raw emotion and symbolism of Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the textured of Vincent Van Gogh, Cyril’s work blends fine art and social commentary. Influenced by the surreal dreamscapes of Salvador Dali and the vibrant self-expression of Frida Kahlo, Cyril's art weaves together imaginative narratives that challenge perception and celebrate individuality. A native of New Orleans, Cyril also draws inspiration from local artist Lionel Milton, whose streetwise style and celebration of Black culture resonate strongly in Cyril’s own creative vision.

Cyril’s passion for art allows him to explore themes of identity, community, and celebration, making his paintings a compelling extension of his artistic voice. Through his canvas, he invites audiences to experience the same energy and emotion that his music delivers, fostering a deeper appreciation for the interconnectedness of these two creative realms. Through paint and mixed media, Cyril channels history, identity and spirit-creating art that speaks to both personal journey and collective experience.
